Wild Beasts – The Devil’s Crayon

21 05 2008

With every single Wild Beasts release, I am initially sceptical but it slowly winds its way inside my brain and heart and limbs. ‘Assembly’ was one of my favourite tunes of last year and I very much look forward to their album, ‘Limbo, Panto’ in June. This single, ‘The Devil’s Crayon’ follows the album about two weeks afterwards. I haven’t decided how much I like it yet but I have a feeling it will be another grower. It begins in a slightly more conservative fashion than their usual fare, with bassist, Tom Fleming taking on lead vocal spotlight but as soon as Hayden Thorpe joins him, it wanders into their unique pigeonhole.  They play Dublin on May 29th (in the Tripod, supporting The Maccabees) which is another gig I’d love to see in the next week which I will more than likely miss, unfortunately. I have no idea how the world will take to Wild Beasts. Somehow, I imagine they’re too peculiar to do any kind of crossing over but I have a feeling there will be some who will clasp their records quite dearly to their heart.
