MGMT – ‘Time To Pretend’

I’ve been calling them Management but David Letterman introduces them as MGMT, which is their name so I suppose he is probably right and I’m probably wrong. It’s the first time I’ve heard someone say their name so how is one to know? I used to have the same problem with Autechre and I’m sure lots of people have been baffled as to how to pronounce bands like !!! and 😉 . I’m sure there are other examples of mispronounced band names in my past but I can’t think of any right now.

This is MGMT performing the excellent ‘Time To Pretend’. There’s a lot of hype surrounding these boys right now but this is a great track and it sounds deadly on the radio, despite the fact that it probably won’t get much airplay due to the line, “Let’s go to Paris, shoot some heroin and fuck with the stars”. You may notice that the line has been altered for the Letterman show and I presume that the little Doors interlude at the end of the performance is an in-joke to that fact that The Doors refused to change a line in ‘Light My Fire’ on The Ed Sullivan Show and The Letterman Show is recorded in the same Ed Sullivan Theater.  There’s a bit of a Flaming Lips buzz to this song, I think but with added cape-factor.

I’ve noticed a resurgence in the use of capes of late (Air, Efterklang, Noel Fielding) . I’m not sure if this is a good thing or a bad thing. Somehow, I can’t imagine cape garb becoming the norm for blokes going down the pub on a Friday night. Which, come to think of it, is rather a shame.
